How the cycle works: three kinds of internship, three calendars

updated · 7 notes · 1 figure · 3 min read · 5 sources

Banks fill their graduate classes largely out of their own interns, so the internship is the application. What varies is when you have to apply for it, and the answer depends more on the city than on the bank.

One summer, three calendars: how summer 2027 was recruited
  1. December 2025New York posts summer 2027JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, Citi, Jefferies, Lazard, BNP Paribas, Santander, Wells Fargo.
  2. Aug-Sep 2026London opens summer 2027Reviewed as applications arrive.
  3. Any quarterFrankfurt off-cycleThree-month internships on a rolling basis; German required.
  4. Jan or JulLondon off-cycle startsSix months, January to June or July to December.
  5. Jul-Sep 2027The summer internshipAbout ten weeks, ending in a return offer or not.

US posting dates per Adventis (updated 1 September 2026); London opening window per Mergers & Inquisitions; programme shapes per Baird's European intern programme. Other banks differ by weeks, not by seasons.

  • Three kinds of internship, and what each one is for1,2

An insight or spring programme is a week of shadowing early in a degree and is mainly a route into the summer process. The summer internship, about ten weeks, is the one that produces graduate offers. An off-cycle internship runs outside the summer, typically three to six months, and in continental Europe it is as much a hiring channel as the summer itself.

  • The internship is the job application1,3

The internship is where banks do their graduate hiring. A Frankfurt banker put it plainly in an interview published in 2014: banks hire directly for full-time roles only when they could not find enough interns to accept offers. Treat the graduate application as the fallback, not the plan.

  • New York recruits more than eighteen months ahead4

Summer 2027 analyst roles in the US were posted in December 2025 by JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, Citi, Jefferies, Lazard, BNP Paribas, Santander and Wells Fargo, and the posting dates keep moving earlier. A European student who wants a New York summer is applying in the first half of the degree, often before any finance experience exists.

  • London is later, and fills as it goes1

London summer applications open in August and September of the year before, and are reviewed as they come in. Applying late means competing for whatever places are still open. The London page has the full route, from spring week to visa.

  • Off-cycle is Europe's second system2,3

Baird's European programme is a representative shape: in London a six-month off-cycle internship starting in January or July, open to penultimate- and final-year bachelor's and master's students, beside a ten-week summer; in Frankfurt a three-month quarterly internship with rolling applications. Frankfurt offices have long kept interns year-round, often students between a bachelor's and a master's.

  • In Frankfurt, German is a requirement, not a plus2,3

Baird's Frankfurt internships are open to German- and English-speaking students only, while its London programmes ask for English. The working language inside German teams is German even where the documents are in English, so a candidate without it is realistically applying to London.

  • The odds, in the banks' own numbers5

Goldman Sachs had more than 360,000 applications for 2,600 intern places in 2025, about 0.7%, and called it the most competitive class in its history. JPMorgan had 493,000 applications for 4,000 places in 2024, about 0.8%. Those are global figures across every division, so they say more about the volume than about the odds for a prepared candidate at one team.
