Corporate banking: the lending side of the relationship

updated · 14 notes · 1 figure · 5 min read · 9 sources

The part of a universal bank that lends to companies and runs their cash. It sits next to investment banking and feeds it clients, and the job differs from it in almost every way that matters to a candidate.

The bonus and hours rows for corporate banking are US figures from one practitioner guide (as of 2025), and the high-earner row is the EBA's count of staff paid EUR 1m or more for 2024, split by business line. Each is dated in the notes below.1-4

01the role

What corporate bankers sell, and how big the business is.

  • Credit and the relationship3,5

Corporate bankers sell credit - term loans, and revolving facilities on which the client pays a commitment fee for a line it draws as needed - along with cash management and trade finance, and act as the hub through which a client reaches the rest of the bank.

  • A large business in its own right1,6

At Deutsche Bank the Corporate Bank - transaction banking for corporate, institutional and commercial clients - earned €7.4bn of net revenues in 2025, against €1.9bn for the advisory and capital markets teams.

  • Repeat business, not the deal of the decade3

The aim is to win repeat business from clients over years rather than large fees from a single transaction - and, at banks that combine the two, to win clients who then hire the bank for M&A and for debt and equity issues.

  • The relationship and the product are different jobs7

HSBC's graduate listing, as read on 8 October 2026, files Relationship Management and Transaction Banking as separate areas of interest, and splits the second into Global Payments Solutions and Global Trade Solutions. The person who owns the client is therefore not necessarily the person who builds its cash or trade solution.

02credit and the lender's return

What the work is judged on.

  • Credit analysis, not valuation3

The work is judging whether a borrower can repay. Corporate bankers do not build DCFs, merger models or LBO models.

  • A revolver is paid for even when undrawn3,5

A revolving facility is a line of credit the borrower draws as it needs cash. The lender charges a commitment fee on the unused part, and interest accrues only on what is drawn. Both guides describe it the same way, which is why "a line it draws as needed" earns the bank something before a euro is lent.

  • The covenant question in the interview3

Mergers & Inquisitions' guide works a covenant question: EBITDA of 100, debt of 500, a 6% cost of debt, a maximum debt / EBITDA of 6x and a minimum EBITDA / interest of 2x. Leverage is 5.0x and cover is 3.3x, so EBITDA can fall to about 83 before the leverage test breaks (a 17% cushion) but to 60 before the cover test does (40%). The tighter test is the one that matters. The arithmetic is this site's; the setup is the guide's.

next: pay and hours →

03pay and hours

The checkable figures are American, and the European ones are mostly missing.

  • Better hours, a smaller bonus3

Weeks run to around 50-55 hours. Base salaries are slightly below investment banking's, and the bonus is a smaller share of pay - around 30-50% of base. The figures are US ones.

  • The very top of European pay is in investment banking2,8

The European Banking Authority counted 2,266 people paid EUR 1m or more for 2024 in EU/EEA credit institutions, published on 16 April 2026. Investment banking accounts for 904, retail banking 262, asset management 107 and corporate functions 219. The table has no corporate banking row, so the number of corporate bankers among them is not published.

  • Bonus caps bound the share in the EU2

For EU institutions the ratio of variable to fixed pay is limited to 100%, or 200% with shareholder approval, as the EBA's dashboard states. Even the upper US analyst figure here, 50-70% of base, sits under that ceiling, so the cap bites at senior levels and not on a graduate's first bonus.

04getting in

Graduate programmes exist and are dated; the interview is a credit one.

  • A graduate route with dated windows7

As read on 8 October 2026, HSBC listed a UK Relationship Management - Commercial Bank graduate programme that opened on 1 October 2026 and closed on 18 October 2026 for a 5 July 2027 start, and work-placement and internship versions closing on 1 November 2026. Windows are short and move each year, so check the bank's own page rather than this one.

  • The bank's debt questions are the nearest drill

The question bank's debt capital markets set covers covenants, revolvers and term loans, which is the closest match to what a corporate banking interview asks - its leveraged finance and ratings chapters most of all - and the behavioural set covers the rest.

next: exits →

05exits

Narrow, and mostly to the client's side of the table.

  • Narrow exits3

It is almost impossible to move straight from corporate banking to private equity, hedge funds or corporate development. The realistic exits are corporate treasury, the rating agencies and fixed-income research.

  • Corporate treasury is the client's side of the same table9

TARGETjobs describes a corporate treasurer's work as including negotiating and evaluating overdrafts and loans with bankers, and says it is mostly large organisations that employ them, so most UK jobs are in London and other large cities. Entry is by a finance-type degree, or any degree plus a year of treasury work, towards the Association of Corporate Treasurers' qualifications. That page covers the destination, not the move from a bank.
